Various Artists – A Very Special Christmas (Big Machine Version)

by Chuck Dauphin

A few weeks ago, we took a look at the Contemporary Christian version of the successful “A Very Special Christmas” series that was released this year. It’s one of two new pieces that benefits Special Olympics, this one shining the spotlight on secular artists.

Train kicks off the set with a stirring take on “Joy To The World,” and listen for the unique way the band mixes in one of their biggest hit records. Jewel contributes a warm vibe to “Angels We Have Heard On High,” while “American Idol” alum Jordin Sparks delivers a soaring version of “Do You Hear What I Hear.”

Other highlights include Rascal Flatts’ version of the Kenny Rogers classic “Mary, Did You Know,” Vince Gill’s “Breath of Heaven,” and Martina McBride’s power house version of “Please Come Home For Christmas.” Mix in classic recordings from Amy Grant and Christina Aguilera, and you’ve got the perfect album to celebrate the season with!
