Joe Bonsall – On The Road With The Oak Ridge Boys

To call a piece of work by an artist, writer or musician “definitive” is like saying “be-de be-de be-de… That’s All Folks.”After all, it doesn’t take into account what comes next. So, with Joe Bonsall’s new book, On The Road With The Oak Ridge Boys, I think I’ll label it the “Nearly complete until the next chapter” book on the legendary Country and Gospel quartet.

There’s nothing quite like the excitement of an Oak Ridge Boys show. However, the legendary quartet has never released an album documenting that experience – until now. 2013 marks four decades since Joe Bonsall first walked onto a stage with Richard Sterban, Duane Allen, and William Lee Golden as the Oak Ridge Boys. That seems like a pretty good reason to celebrate, and the Oaks do so by releasing a compilation CD that shines the spotlight on the music for which they are best known. Of course, before their record-setting Country career, the Oaks were among …

The Album Collection: DELIVER, The Oak Ridge Boys (1984)

In this series, I have taken a look at albums that either have been among my favorites – or have made an impact on my life in some way. This week, I take a look at an album that made quite an impact on me in 1984 – when it was released. I hated it. But, some twenty-eight years later, it has become one of my favorite discs ever – one that takes me back to a simpler place. However, it wasn’t that way when I was in the fourth grade. But, let me explain. My mother loved the Oak Ridge Boys – particularly Richard and Duane. (No offense, Joe or William Lee!) So, some of my earliest memories of music around the house was of the Oaks. In 1984, the group released a song called “I Guess It Never Hurts…

The Oak Ridge Boys – Back Home Again

Though they have become one of the most successful Country acts of all time, Gospel Music is still a large part of the Oak Ridge Boys’ musical stylings. For their latest disc, the group digs a little deeper into the well for a few Gospel classics – as well as few Country classics with an Inspirational slant. As usual, the “Mighty Oaks” rise to the occasion. Highlights here include “Lead Me To That Rock” and “Out Of Bondage,” both…

The Oak Ridge Boys – It’s Only Natural

Joining forces with restaurant chain Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, the Oak Ridge Boys mix the old with the new on this special collection. Seven of these twelve cuts have been released in one form or the other by the Oaks previously. The majority of the re-cuts were hits for the Oaks during the time period that Steve Sanders was in the group. Over the years, I have felt that some of these songs have been forgotten somewhat, and it’s good to hear them again…
