A Salute to Alex Lifeson of Rush

Rush guitar god Alex Lifeson turns 60 on August 27. A founding member of Rush, he’s dazzled over numerous albums, adapted his guitar style, and has seen Rush go from one of the most “uncool” bands on the planet to… actually, quite a cool band really. Rush do their own thing, whether you love them or hate them. What’s never been in doubt is the trio’s musicianship. Geddy Lee (bass/vocals) and Neil Peart (drums/lyrics) are regularly voted “best ever” rock players in their field…

Top 10 Greatest Rocking Bass Riffs

Bass riffs might not be the first thing that comes to mind when listening to rock music, since so much of a rock song is centered around the guitar. But if you stop and think about it for a while, you’ll discover that there are quite a few bass riffs that also serve as the driving force behind a song, and surely some that you didn’t even realize were bass riffs to begin with. Robert Kinsler – My Favorite Albums of 2012

I have always been reluctant to post any so-called “Best Of” album lists. Rather I prefer to title my end-of-year lists “Favorite Albums” since I think that while a certain album might be recognized as significant or essential in any given year it might wear out its welcome in the years ahead. To be honest, I rarely listen to Nirvana’s Nevermind but still love to play Pearl Jam’s timeless Ten and both were released in 1991. The list that follows here is a subjective look at what I like and albums I’m pretty sure will sound great in 2013, 2020 or beyond…

Vindication For 2013 Rock Hall Of Fame Inductees

Randy Newman’s glad he didn’t have to do anything drastic to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The members of Rush are choosing to let bygones be bygones. And Quincy Jones, well, he’s still mad. For most …

Concert Review: Rush At Its Grandest In Anaheim

Every legendary band has its hardcore followers, but the faithful who are drawn to Rush deserve credit on a number of fronts. Unlike many classic rock shows where audiences seem more interested in talking on their cell phones, posing for pictures with pals or going on an endless number of beer runs, the majority of fans seated around me were fully tuned into Saturday night’s three-hour show (plus brief intermission) at Honda Center. I can’t remember another Southern California arena audience over the past few years quite as riveted as this one.
