Tim Menzies – His Way Of Loving Me

Sometimes, as a writer, one can feel somewhat inadequate. To quote Bill Anderson, this is one of those “Sometimes.” I was delighted recently to learn of a new album from Tim Menzies. As “Tim Mensy,” the Virginia native recorded some of the most unforgettable music Nashville has ever seen during stints with Columbia and Giant in the 1980s and 1990s – regardless of chart position. As a songwriter, he penned…

Charlsey Etheridge – Memories Of Mine

As a music fan, I have to tell you that the more old school the better – as far as I am concerned. That saying that, I know it’s not always the easy way to get exposure for your art or airplay, but I love an artist that isn’t afraid to show their twangier side – one that hearkens back to the traditional sounds. Georgia-born Charlsey Etheridge is one such artist. She has assembled a collection of songs that have been done time and again, but knows that a great song is always just that…..a great song. She doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel on standards…

OBB – Self Titled

Nashville is known as “Music City, USA,” and that nickname is indicative of the, many different musical styles that come from the city. Of course, Country Music is the pre-dominant genre that fans think of regarding Nashville, but there is also a huge Rock scene in the city. But, the Christian music industry also is centered around the Middle Tennessee area, as well. One musical act that is definitely getting some attention in the Christian music…

Steven Curtis Champman – Deep Roots

Growing up in the Bluegrass state, Steven Curtis Chapman grew up inspired by fiddles, banjos, mandolins, and all things acoustic. While he made a reputation as one of the top Contemporary Christian performers of all time, his earliest musical memories include the classic Gospel songs in their most simple form. Having always wanted to record an album in that vein, the singer has joined forces with Cracker Barrel for a collection that…

Rick Stephenson – Love Beyond Reason

When it’s done right, Inspirational music brings you closer to your spiritual side. Wisconsin native Rick Stephenson does just that with a praise-filled collection that includes songs designed to warm your heart – and bring to mind your daily walk. The opener, “Be Still,” is a prime example of this. What really makes the track work is they way he shifts the tempo from the verses to the choruses. It makes for interesting listening, which kind of leaves you…

Danny Riddle – Old Time Religion

In Gospel Music – perhaps more than any other music form – there’s something about the old songs that bring a little bit of peace from the world. A native of the state of Florida, Riddle gives each and every one of these time-honored Gospel songs a spirited performance. As someone who is very steeped in the Southern Gospel tradition, Riddle knows how special these songs are to the listener. So, he wisely doesn’t try to take away anything – or add anything to the songs- just let them live and breathe on their own…

Dailey & Vincent – The Gospel Side

Since they first started recording together in 2007, Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent have given Country and Bluegrass fans some of the best musical moments of the past five years – with 2010’s Statler Brothers tribute album being a highlight. That album was released under a marketing agreement with Cracker Barrel, and the project did so well that the restaurant chain asked the duo to partner up for another release. As the title of this disc implies, this is an all-Inspirational album that features their talents up close and personal – perhaps stronger than ever before. Some of these songs have been cut before, such as “Eternal…

Leigh Nash – Hymns And Sacred Songs

As lead singer of the unfortunately-defunct group Sixpence None The Richer, Leigh Nash has dazzled music fans with her sunny vocals on “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes.” Though the subject matter is different, her approach on these inspirational songs is no different. After all, Gospel music is supposed to make you feel good, is it not? The album is a mixed bag, from a stylistic standpoint. There’s a mountain type feel to the opener, the lifting “Savior, Like A Shepherd, Lead Us,” but she is able to switch musical…

The McCrary Sisters – Living “The Journey”

The musical path of the McCrary Sisters has taken them to the heights of the Gospel Music world over their career, and their latest disc, Our Journey, is a reminder of that. In an interview for MNN, Regina McCrary said their father was very much a part of the sessions. “It was definitely a dream he had for us,” she said. “All of us girls looked at each other and said ‘Let’s go for it.’ We started out writing songs and picking out others, and doing what came naturally. It’s something…

The McCrary Sisters – Our Journey

Nashville’s nickname is “Music City, U.S.A.” Notice that the description doesn’t allude to one specific genre per se. There’s a little bit of Country, some Alternative, a dash of Rock, and a huge helping of Gospel in the city’s musical DNA. It shows quitle handily on this album by some of Davidson County’s finest! Ann, Deborah, Regina, and Alfreda come by their singing talents natural. They are the daughters of the Rev. Samuel McCrary, who was also one of the original members of the Fairfield Four. Collectively…

Adam Cunningham – What About Tonight

Nashville is the home of many styles of music – besides Country. Gospel music has a huge spot in the city’s musical climate, and the genre might have found its’ next big star in Iowa born Adam Cunningham. I will go on record by saying that he’s one of the strongest singers I have heard come along in Gospel Music in quite some time. His voice is very strong, and that’s apparent from the start – on the soulful “Bring You Home.” His vocal is so powerful on the cut that you can actually hear the tear in his…

Rene Herbert – This Is

Needless to say, the music that comes out of the New Orleans would qualify as having a little bit of soul. While Rene Herbert isn’t what you would term a soul singer per se, her music does have as much power and emotion as anything else coming out of the city of the Saints. Herbert pours her heart and soul into these twelve Gospel songs, and there is not a clunker in the bunch. Gifted as a singer as well as a songwriter, she puts together lyrics that will touch and inspire you. Whether it be the prayer for strength “Something…
