Instrumental rockers Steelism have released a new song, “The Serge,” from their upcoming EP, The Drawing Room, Volume 1, out on July 10 via their own imprint, Intoxicating Sounds. The limited-edition release will be available on CD only at their live shows (scroll down for tour details) and through their website, steelismmusic.com, and will be streaming exclusively on Spotify.
Co-written with Brendan Benson of the Raconteurs,”The Serge” finds the band melding “spacey synths and shimmery guitar melodies with just enough distortion to keep the pace energetic” According to the band, the song’s title may simply be a nod to a type of synthesizer developed in the 1970s or it could be the theme for a modern day super-villain of the same name.
Founded by Jeremy Fetzer (guitar) and Spencer Cullum Jr. (pedal steel), Steelism’s 2014 debut album, 615 to FAME (Single Lock Records), was featured as an NPR “First Listen” and profiled on NPR Weekend Edition and was included in Rolling Stone Country’s “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” NPR’s Ann Powers wrote that Steelism “stands out for its ability to blend vintage styles — steel-guitar jazz, surf rock, the cool vibe of 1960s movie soundtracks — in ways that don’t feel dated.”
The Drawing Room, Volume 1 is the first installment in a multi-volume series that will lead up to the release of their second full-length album.
