George Jones – United Artists Rarities

by Chuck Dauphin

2013 promises to be a big one in the career of George Jones. For starters, the legendary singer will embark on his final “Grand Tour,” and Omnivore Recordings will be releasing all of his singles for United Artists Records on one disc. To give fans a preview of that disc, the label has issued a six-cut vinyl release of some rare studio recordings by Jones as part of their Record Store Day series.

The cuts are all unused alternate takes from some of his session work at the time, including a pair of duets with Melba Montgomery. Jones has been quoted in interviews before as saying that Montgomery was his favorite duet partner that he worked with. Listen to them together, and you will see why. She was just as traditional based as he was, and their pairing was truly one of Pappy Daily’s best moves as Jones’ producer. The pair of tracks included here, “Will There Ever Be Another” and “Alabama” are great showcases for the harmony they displayed on record.

Of the solo cuts, Omnivore has included some absolute gems, including”I Saw Me” and “Is This How A Broken Heart Dies.” Some have said that Daily worked Jones more than he should have in the studio, and there was some fluff from time to time, but not here. This is the good stuff, folks…simply the good stuff!
