More about Emmylou Harris and Bonaparte’s Retreat: Emmylou’s desire for helping animals resonated when she adopted her dog Bonaparte from a shelter. Bonaparte stayed with Emmylou for ten years. After his passing, she was inspired to create a way to save animals that shared the same fate as her beloved Bonaparte. Founded in 2004, Bonaparte’s Retreat is dedicated to providing nurturing foster care for dogs when allotted time at Metro Nashville Animal Control has elapsed and to help them find permanent loving homes.
With more than 15 million albums sold worldwide and currently on the road promoting her album, Old Yellow Moon, with Rodney Crowell, it is no wonder why Emmylou Harris has, in the last decade, gained admiration as much for her eloquently straightforward songwriting as for her incomparably expressive singing. Leaving her mark in the industry for the last thirty plus years, her previous release, Hard Bargain, featured the heartfelt tune Big Black Dog. With its loping canine-like rhythms, is also a true tale, about a black lab mix named Bella.
On top of her long list of accomplishments as one of country music’s greatest songwriters, Emmylou is involved with various animal charities and organizations. She has been an active supporter of the Nashville Humane Association, done a PSA for PETA as well as participating in their dog house building campaign and has been a Goodwill Ambassador for Best Friends Animal Society.
