Though Emile Millar lives in Austin now, he grew up in Santa Barbara, building a reputation as a composer and producer with song placements in several prominent films and TV shows. In fact, Millar has a track on the new Parenthood: Original Television Soundtrack Volume 2 compilation. But he’s also recorded his own EP, and is celebrating the Nov. 5 release of his self-titled project with a 7 p.m. performance on his home turf — at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club, 1221 State St. Also performing are the Tearaway, Sean McCue, Robin & Darin and Zach Madden. Admission is $10 and includes the EP.
EMILE MILLAR, Millar’s Big Bend Records label debut, contains five folk-tinged pop-rock originals he describes as “alternative soft-rock.” Produced by Brian Standefer, it incorporates influences from Laurel Canyon greats Buffalo Springfield, the Byrds and Jackson Browne to more eclectic acts such as Nick Drake, Electric Light Orchestra, Wilco and Gerry Rafferty.
Fans of The Avengers, Waitress, Sunshine Cleaning, One Tree Hill and Parenthood might recognize Millar’s work, including his track on the new Parenthood compilation, “Honey I’ll Try.” It’s surrounded by contributions from Lyle Lovett, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Brett Dennen, Glen Hansard and Greg Laswell, among others.
When he’s not busy composing, recording or performing, Millar is likely in the water; a dedicated surfer, he loves returning to his favorite sunny shores in Santa Barbara.
