David Shelby – Self-Titled

by Chuck Dauphin
There’s a certain bit of attitude that comes from the Motor City. One artist who should know that better than anyone is David Shelby. He calls his music “Nashville meets Detroit,” and with good reason. It has the country sound, but also is balanced with a good bit of soul.

That is evidenced by the energetic sound of “My So Called Life,” which Shelby gets a chance to show his groove on. It’s a mission accomplished, and he continues to shine throughout the album on such tracks as “The Life Is Mine,” which has a radio-ready feel about it, as well as the upbeat dance tune “Calling All Cowgirls.”

If there’s any doubt about his heritage, it all comes across very eloquently in “She Loves Me Anyway,” which has a dose of Kid Rock in it, and the thumping Country-Rock of “Last Train Out Of Hell,” which both have an authentic Detroit feel on them. Perhaps the best song on the album is the effective “Prayer Of The Broken,” which is about the struggles that so many of us are going through today.

All in all, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if David Shelby makes a name for himself within the industry. He’s got the ingredients – the looks, the talent, and the songs. This could be the start of something big!
