North Carolina native Chris Cook definitely has a little something for everyone in his approach to music. I have not heard an album in a while where the artist experiements with so many different styles, yet makes them all work as a cohesive project.
The most interesting thing about this album is that he doesn’t try to mix the individual tracks up stylistically. What is Country is Country, and what isn’t , is still good.
The set kicks off with the R&B funk of the title cut, which he seems to deliver almost effortlessly. He revisits that style a little bit later on with “Get Over The One,” which brings to mind the talents of Con Hunley. It’s a performance that he flat out nails!
Speaking of influences, maybe it’s just me, but I hear quite a bit of the great Larry Gatlin coming through on this disc. Whether it be “Growing Up” or “Who Can You Be,” Cook really pulls it off!
Other highlights include the story song “The Boy I Used To Know” and the soul-ful “Ezekiel’s Wheel.” As far as mainstream Country goes, I think the best bet for airplay is “Don’t Call Me,” but I think that just might be a erroneous title. I think a lot of people will call the name of Chris Cook over the next few years! He’s got the ability to be a lot of things to a lot of people, and I bet that’s going to pay off!
