Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson and legendary rock guitarist Jeff Beck brought their co-headlining tour to the Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Atlanta, where they performed many of their hits for the enthusiastic fans of all ages who came to see them under the warm, autumn evening stars. It was a night of memories as the two music veterans and their bands performed separate sets, then joined together at the end of the show.
Opening the evening, Brian Wilson took the stage and played piano, bringing a number of the Beach Boys’ catalog to life in the southern capital. Backed by an eleven piece band including original Beach Boys guitarists Al Jardine and David Marks, Wilson sang hits like “Surfer Girl,” “Fun, Fun, Fun” and, of course, “California Girls”, along with many more. Despite turning 71 years old in June, Wilson is still able to hit many of the higher notes of the songs and demonstrate how he has been a mainstay in the music industry for over five decades.
After a short changeover, British rock legend Jeff Beck took the stage and exercised his guitar chops for the gathered crowd. With a history dating back to having replaced Eric Clapton as the lead guitarist for The Yardbirds in 1965, Beck has become one of Rock-N-Roll’s most notable guitarists throughout his long and storied career. With sixteen albums under his belt, Beck released his latest work, Emotion and Commotion, in 2010. His fans at Chastain were treated to hits from much of his catalog and enjoyed watching a musician who, despite turning 69 this year, still manages to keep his strings humming and demonstrates why he was ranked 5th in Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”
The Brian Wilson / Jeff Beck tour continues through October, stopping in locations like Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Toronto, Chicago and more. If you have a chance to see these two legends in concert together, I would recommend it as you will find yourself enjoying an evening of music and memories.
