I recently checked out the latest CD from Rhythm and Blues artist Bigg Redd entitled Do You Qualify (2013). The band Standard 4 piece line-up which includes drums, bass, accordion, organ, vocals and harmonica. I would say they possess above way average songwriting and way above average playing within the genere. You will find many impressive musical licks along the way.
Timing is spot on within the Rockabilly, R&B grooves. Redd can hold his own on the accordion and vocals, but more importantly the songwriting is so freaking entertaining. All of this makes for a deadly combination. The music possesses a Bluesy, Rockabilly, Rock type stigma. Definitely classic Rhythm and Blues that is timeless and a blast to listen to. Music will remind you of classic Delbert McClinton, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers and Roy Buchanan.
The songs: simply put – all songs are fun and will lift your spirits because it’s the blues were talking about. There’s nothing like a true blue musical production to get wrapped around and this is one of them. I kept waiting for a weak song to come down the line – I eventually gave up on that. In fact the songs keep coming at you like a 1-2 punch. The production comes fully loaded with 13 songs. Simply put, very much like life itself this CD personifies life experience, with music that is 100% honest, pure and just a blast to listen to. If I was a betting man I’d wager Bigg Redd is probably fun to hang out with or check out live.
The production is professional grade from start to finish. There’s not many songs you can listen to time and time again. The good:
honorable mentions go out to the gifted songwriting and singing abilities from Joeseph Bigg Redd Arline. His band is equally as amazing. Folks out there who enjoy Americana, Rockabilly, R&B and even classic jam band rock will fall head over heals with this CD. The bad: Nothing to report. The ugly: Nothing to report. The verdict Edo You Qualify by Bigg Redd has everything: good playing, fancy picking, amazing songs, true to form blues messages and music that covers a lot of ground – R&B, Zydaco, Americana, Rockabilly, Reggae/Tropical-Caribbean and even a dash of Rock.
The Bottom Line WARNING – If you listen to this CD you run the risk falling in love with the music of Bigg Redd.
