Ok, let me see if I get this right. According to their website, Kansas-bred, Texas-based Back Porch Mary is a “Country Rock Hillbilly Punk Band.” Sure, that’s an easy description to get! So, needless to say, this band is not one that you can easily put in a little 4 + 4 box. Those styles are all fully represented here, but they are done so in such a way that they are able to mix them all up into an interesting combination where all are featured at once!
Mike Krug, Joe Miller, and Ryan Kyle comprise the trio, which is one of the more unique sounding acts I have heard of in some time. The song that I think best personifies what the trio is all about is “You Don’t Know About Me.” I wouldn’t call it pure Country, pure Alternative, or pure Americana, but rather a combination of all three. I think it could easily go in all three stylistic directions. “No Bad News Today” is a well-written song, and the lyrics are quite humorous, which is a trademark of their sound, also coming to light on the hilarious ”Drove Her To Drinkin,” which could very well be a highlight here.
They also make their mark on such wide-open fare as “Fast Car,” the funky “I’m A Soldier,” and the laid-back “Next To You.” If you like your music outside of the musical norm, give this one a chance. It might be exactly what you’re looking for!
