Trey Hensley - It Is What It Is
by Chuck Dauphin

In 1980, George Burns scored an
unlikely Country hit with “I Wish I Was Eighteen Again.”
As we age, we all look back to that time in our life with a
sense of yearning. At that point in life, we all had the
world right in front of us, with dreams to dream and time to
spare. At 18, many of us had no idea where we wanted to be
in life in ten years, or what we wanted to do. Trey
Hensley is just a little bit different.
The Jonesborough, TN native has taken the Bluegrass world by the
horns during his teenage years, and now as he is at the starting
point of adulthood---he’s ready to do the same to Country Music.
The all-world picker, who has already played with Marty Stuart
and Earl Scruggs, has issued his second Country album—albeit one
with no less star-power.
Hensley takes quite a few musical chances on IT IS WHAT IT IS,
and each of those prove how much he is capable of. Whether
it’s covering Elton John or Conway Twitty, there’s a depth and a
talent that is so obvious that it can’t be denied. On the
former, he chooses ‘Country Comfort,” which also was covered a
few years back by Keith Urban, and he makes a strong opening
statement, while in covering Twitty, he goes the “Deep Catalog”
route, choosing the under-rated mid-80s gem “The Legend And The
Man,” where he gets some help from Oak Ridge Boys Duane Allen,
Joe Bonsall, and Richard Sterban.
It’s not all covers, however. Hensley is quite capable of
finding a new song and making it his own, as well. “On The
Line,” a duet with Janie Fricke, is a great example of this, as
is the Steve Wariner / Lane Turner / Rick Carnes written title
cut. On cuts like these two, as well as the entire album,
Hensley makes no bones about the fact that he is country…..and
proud of it!
There’s a lot of talented newcomers out there in Country Music
these days, and Hensley is one name that should be near the top
of the class. Labels take heed, this is one that you need
to be snapping up!
