Anna Garrott - Only Time Will Tell

by Chuck Dauphin

Alabama born and bred, Anna Garrott grew up enchanted by the music coming out of Nashville years before she was born---artists like Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette.  Finally, she’s getting a chance to shine as a vocalist, and she does quite well on her debut disc for Blue Steel Records.

Who is Anna Garrott, you ask? Well, there’s a little bit of those acts mentioned above, but also a little bit of Emmylou Harris, a dash of Shania, and a little bit of the Jo Dee Messina bounce.  But, all along, it comes off pretty much as Anna Garrott.

Garrott’s strengths are songs with a little bit of tempo.  She does well when she has a little pep in her step, and the opening cut, “What A Way To Go,” is fine proof of this.  That Messina influence I was speaking of comes to the forefront on “As Soon As I’m Over You” and “Trouble Is A Woman,” which was a single a few years back for the underrated Julie Reeves.

She can also handle a ballad, as well.  Some of the best examples of that include “Silver Wings,” “Pink Roses,” and the restrained “Only Time Will Tell.” Time will tell indeed where Garrott goes in her career, but if she continues down this musical path….I like her chances quite a bit!
